We’re getting so close to the finish line! Thanks for sticking through this challenge with me! I hope your home is looking wonderful and you feel that you have made great progress! I have 6 totes of things I’ve decluttered now priced and ready for a garage sale in a few weeks. Not only would I normally put off getting ready for the garage sale until the week before, I have found a lot of things I wouldn’t have got to because of this challenge.
Today we will be digging in and organizing and decluttering your coat closet, utility closet, or if you have a stairway in your house, you could organize and declutter the closet under the stairway!
If your closets feel cramped and overstuffed, it’s time for decluttering and organizing. There never seems to be enough closet space but when I look inside of them, a lot of what is in there, we hardly ever use. It’s time to get smart with storage and organization! As you work on your closet, decide what needs to be kept, what doesn’t, and what is the best way to bless others with what you no longer need. If you have small closets are you taking advantage of space saving organization ideas such as pegs, hooks, racks or over the door organizers to maximize your door space? These work great for hats, scarves, belts, and purses. It hooks also work great for haning up brooms, mops, and other items like Swiffers. If you have luggage in your closet (like we do) can you move them to a utility room or fit them under a bed? Could you add shelving to give you more space? My suggestions for cleaning out the closet are: first to take all the items out. What exactly is the purpose of this closet?
With an empty closet, imagine how you want it to look. Get your dusting supplies, vacuum, and cleaning supplies and do a quick tidy up of the closet. If you have shelf-liner to put down and make it look prettier, go for it! I know for myself that if something looks pretty, I try to keep it clean and organized!
Next go through your items you pulled out. What belongs in a different location? Put those in a laundry basket to put away in a little bit. Throw away the trash. Are there items inside that are outdated or no longer useful to your family? Holiday decorations that you no longer want or can be stored in a different area such as utility room or storage room? Are you storing coats in the closet? How many coats do you have for each member of your family? Can you get rid of one or two to save some space? Has anyone outgrown what is inside? Are any of the coats stained? As far as the rest of the items in the closet, sort them (make sure the closet is the best place to be storing that item) and put the items you’re keeping away. If you are donating, put them in your pile of donations. If you are selling them, either get them listed online or priced for a garage sale. B
y taking care of all of this now, you won’t have to deal with it later! Do you have items in there you’ve never used? How long have they been in there? It’s time to use those items or find them a new home. If you are like me, you can’t be storing things for several years and not be using them. Storage space is valuable.
Now that you have a clean and organized closet, throw away all trash, put away the items that belong somewhere else that you put in the laundry basket, and you are finished! Great job! Don’t forget, in case you have missed any days in this series, here they are!
(Don’t worry you can jump in right where we are in the series and go back later if you want to catch up or just finish out what we’re working on with us! I’m so happy that you are joining us in organizing and decluttering your home!)
