I hope you have been feeling blessed by the progress you are making in your home! If you haven’t started the organizing and decluttering challenge, no worries! Start where you are, you can always go back!
Today we will be digging in and organizing and decluttering once again! Today’s challenge is: decluttering and organizing your linen closet.
If your closet looks anything like mine, you will find a wide variety of items inside! Today I challenge you to really dig in and decide what needs to be kept, what doesn’t, and what is the best way to bless others with what you no longer need. How many extra sheet sets, towels, and blankets do you need? Can these extra items be donated to the homeless shelter or even to an animal rescue shelter?
One thing to ask yourself as you are doing this task would be, can I keep these items in the room where the sheets will be used to free up some space and store something else in here?
My suggestions for cleaning out the closet are: first to take all the items out. With an empty closet imagine how you want it to look. Get your dusting supplies, vacuum, and cleaning supplies and do a quick tidy up of the closet. If you have shelf-liner to put down and make it look prettier, go for it! I know for myself that if something looks pretty, I try to keep it clean and organized!
Next go through your linens. Are any of them falling apart with holes in them? Are they old and dingy? Get rid of those and fold the rest. Make sure you put towels where everyone in your family can reach them so they will be able to get their own! Speaking of towels, how many do you actually need? Many organizers recommend 2 towels for each person in your family. Do you have way more than that? (I do!) Maybe it’s time to downsize! The kids each received a towel with their name on it for Christmas this year. This was a fabulous present. They know who’s towel it is and are responsible for their own. Other ideas are assigning a color for each person.
Professional organizers recommend 2 sets of sheets for each bed. Do you have more than that? Once again, with one set on the bed and one other set, can you store the extra set in the bedroom it belongs?
If you have worn, stained or ripped sheets it’s time for them to go! The extra sheets you have could be donated, sold, or given to a family in need.
Have you changed decorations in your bathroom? Are you still storing the old ones? Can you donate those?
As far as the rest of the items in the closet, sort them and put the items you’re keeping away. If you are donating, put them in your pile of donations. If you are selling them, either get them listed online or priced for a garage sale. By taking care of all of this now, you won’t have to deal with it later! If you have beauty items in there make sure they aren’t expired. If they’re getting close to expiration either use them or donate them.
Do you have items in there you’ve never used? tHow long have they been in there? I know I have some wedding presents in mine that have never been used yet. It’s time to either put them in the items I use (and eliminate some older ones) or find them a new home. If you are like me, you can’t be storing things for several years and not be using them. Storage space is valuable.
You may want a shelf to keep items for company when they come such as extra pillows, etc. That’s fine, just make sure that you actually have company visit that will use them. We very rarely have people stay overnight. Our family is all close so the only overnight guests we have are the kids’ friends.
Would it be beneficial to store extra light bulbs, toilet paper, or other items in your linen closet that you use on a regular basis? Would it be beneficial to place a few hooks on the back of your door to hang a robe or would an over the door organizer help you remain organized?
Now that you have a clean and organized closet, throw away all trash and you are finished! Great job!
