Today’s challenge was organizing and decluttering your freezer. After being so proud of not throwing and wasting food with the pantry, the freezer was a different story. (It’s so messy, it’s embarrassing!)
Although, I am pretty sure I haven’t deep cleaned my freezer in a LONG time! Here’s the rundown of the organizing and decluttering that happened in our home today.
I began with removing all the food from my freezer. I didn’t need to thaw it out, but I did wipe it down. I have been reading Martha Stewart’s Homekeeping Handbook: The Essential Guide to Caring for Everything in Your Home (it’s like a homemaking Bible) and she suggests stirring the ice in the ice maker to keep it fresh. I did that as well. I’m sure Martha would be proud!
Our freezer in the kitchen seems to house the random things we’ve bought at the grocery store that are not what we normally eat. I have a chest type freezer where we keep most of that food. However, the freezer in the kitchen is where we keep the frozen waffles, some of the fruit I’ve frozen from the summer (I bring it in from the other freezer as we use it) and our frozen vegetables. It is also where I tend to keep the “kid” food that is sometimes their supper for our date nights.
I noticed as I was cleaning that I didn’t have a replacement box of baking soda to put back in so I added that to my list (this is why I love doing these jobs before I go shopping!) I then quickly put everything back in and noted that I need to make bacon wrapped shrimp soon so the shrimp I’d bought didn’t get freezer burnt.
After I did the inside of the freezer, I cleaned the outside of our refrigerator and freezer. I had just cleaned off the top of the fridge a week or two ago so it was fairly clean (although I’m always amazed how much dust accumulates so quickly!) We decided to put out some of our Easter decorations as a deterrent to the clutter that normally gets shoved up there. We’ll see how that works!
How did organizing and decluttering your freezer go for you? Do you have your grocery list ready now that you have organized and decluttered your refrigerator, pantry and freezer? Give yourself a pat on the back, that’s a lot of cleaning in the kitchen! Tomorrow we will be doing the cupboards (and if the weather is nice enough here, cleaning the oven)!
In case you have missed any days in this series, here they are! (Don’t worry you can jump in right where we are in the series and go back later if you want to catch up or just finish out what we’re working on with us! I’m so happy that you are joining us in organizing and decluttering your home!)
