Spreading Kindness To Others By Doing What’s Best For Them

April 6, 2015 by Jenny 1 Comment

“Kindness, I’ve discovered, is everything in life.” Isaac Bashevis Singer

If you saw my goals post this morning, you already know that we spent Easter at home.  Jason hadn’t been feeling well and about 20 minutes before we were supposed to be at his mom and dad’s for Easter lunch, we decided not to go.  It wasn’t an easy decision.

It’s never fun to miss out on a delicious dinner, conversation, and for the kids to miss an Easter egg hunt, Easter treats, and playing with their cousins.  Needless to say, there were some very unhappy people in our house.

To top it off, we were supposed to meet my dad later in the day to go bowling to celebrate Maddie’s birthday (a little late!)  Recently my dad had an incident with a cow (farming isn’t always the safest occupation) that resulted in some bruises and broken ribs.

Knowing that Jason had been coughing and probably had bronchitis (which we found out today that he does) I didn’t want anyone, especially my recovering dad, to end up with that horrible cough.  We called and rescheduled but the kids were really disappointed.

Romans12

You can print this Roman’s verse here!

Have you ever had to forgo a plan in order to honor someone else above yourself?  It’s never fun to change plans that you were looking forward to but in this Roman’s verse it is showing how God expects us to extend kindness in order to love others more than ourselves.

I explained to the kids that by not getting my dad sick, we were keeping him for possibly being in a lot of pain.  None of them wanted him to suffer and even though they were disappointed were happy that we made the choice to stay home.

Speech

As parents and wives we put others above our needs every day.  I’m late getting this posted today because Maddie had a 4-H speech meet tonight and I helped her all day work on her speech.  It wasn’t what I wanted to work on, but it was priority.  I put off a lot of blogging goals and to-do’s because she needed my help.  That’s what parents do.

Here are a few kindness ideas to help you spread kindness by doing what’s best for someone else:

*Make someone their favorite meal, even if you don’t like it!

*Give the valuable gift of your time, even if it’s not convenient!

*Say “yes” instead of “no”.

What is your favorite way to spread kindness by doing what’s best for someone else?

There are many times where I volunteer to do things I don’t enjoy because someone needs my help. At church, I have been asked several times to help with Godly Play (ages 4 – 7) and I really don’t enjoy it. I don’t enjoy leading or teaching children and I don’t like to miss the sermon. However, I do it because I know my help is needed.
