Spreading Kindness: Showing Compassion and Forgiveness

April 3, 2015 by Jenny 2 Comments

This is Day 3 of a 31 day series on Biblical kindness.  You can find the rest of the posts here!

“A warm smile is the universal language of kindness.” William Arthur Ward

Last night at 11:00 I went to bed with a headache.  It’d been a long day!   Jason and I spent the entire morning trying to save a set of baby calf twins.  In the afternoon, he took off to try to do some field work while I took David and Ari to check the cows again and then catch up on my blog work.  We were lucky to be able to go in to my mom’s in the evening for a quick visit after Blake and Nora had tutoring and came home with very tired and cranky kids.

The tired, crankiness, and the headache continued today when they all decided to wake up before 7 A.M.

By 7:15 Nora came into our room crying that Blake “had ruined her best camp site ever” for her Barbie dolls and that “my Barbie camper is broken forever”!

As the twins and I settled the Barbie issue (and no, the camper wasn’t broken forever if you were wondering) I asked them how they were going to show each other kindness and forgiveness today.

Blank stares.

Ephesians 432

This was the perfect teachable moment to talk to them about Jesus dying on the cross so we can live in Heaven.  Isn’t that really the ultimate act of kindness, compassion, forgiveness, grace, and love?

Nora wasn’t really wanting to forgive her brother for the camper incident until I asked her how she would feel if God wouldn’t forgive her for her sins.  How would any of us feel if God wasn’t willing to forgive us for our sins?

There have been so many times I’ve been thankful for my children’s sins because it makes me sit down and think about my own.

What can you do today or this Easter weekend to show compassion and kindness to those around you?

Here are a few ideas to consider:

  • Invite someone over to share your Easter dinner that doesn’t have family or friends nearby.
  • Send a handwritten card to a child with a message of God loves them.  Be sure to include fun stickers!  Even better, include a children’s Bible to open their eyes to God’s kindness
  • Create a care package with Easter candy for a soldier overseas.
  • Thank a volunteer.  This could be someone who serves at church or at a local organization.  Let them know you appreciate their service!

I’d love for you to comment below and tell me how you’re extending compassion and kindness this weekend!

I think saying Thank You is probably the easiest yet most overlooked way to spread kindness. That feeling of appreciation can really lift people up! At the very least, I try to do that daily.

I’m glad Nora’s Barbie camper is okay!

I agree, Michelle! A simple thank you goes a long ways!
