It can be way too easy when the kids come in with the “I’m bored…” blues to sit them down with a tablet or movie than to be an intentional mom and spend some quality time together. It can also be easy as a mom when I get a minute or two of free time to get lost on Facebook or surfing the net when I could be spending time with my kids!
This year my One Word is savor. I’m doing my best to intentionally savoring my kids’ childhood, the fun things they say, the cute expressions they make, and making memories together.
One way to do this is to print out The Intentional Mom’s I’m Bored List and frame it, post it in your planner, on your refrigerator or some place you will see it often.
B- Begin a new family tradition!
I love family traditions. I want my kids to grow up saying, “remember when we used to do….” Traditions are an intentional way to parent. Without the intention, they won’t happen.
How about a summer picnic at the park or at a local recreation area, scouting a nature trail, having a scavenger hunt, having a block party (or neighbor party for those of you who live in the country like we do), participating in a parade, camping, or fishing at a local pond?
O- Offer your time!
What can you do as a family to help someone else? What can you do as a family to help each other? Check out my post on teaching kids how to serve in your community for ideas!
R- Read aloud to the kids.
Even my oldest child still loves when I read aloud to my kids. We do short stories and chapter books. (If your kids have trouble sitting still, let them color, play with kinetic sand, or work on blocks or legos while you are reading. They will listen and enjoy it!) I’m working on an ultimate list of great books for kids. It will be up soon. Have you seen my post on Family Christian’s 2015 Summer Reading Program? What an awesome way to earn free books for kids!
E- Exercise with a game!
We all need exercise so you might as well make it fun! Tag, Red Light/Green Light, have a dance party, go for a bike ride adventure, play a game of baseball, hopscotch, or an obstacle course race are all great ways to have fun while moving!
D- Do something together!
Be creative, the sky is the limit on this one! What do your kids like to do? Draw, make crafts, dance, blow bubbles, make homemade playdoh, make a blanket fort, bake cookies, or go to the library! The options are endless! Here are 60 fun activities for you to do together!
What does your family like to do together? Start a list and keep with your printable! The next time you hear the “I’m bored…” blues you will have a plan!
Have you enjoyed what you read here today? Do you have friends or other women you know that could benefit from this resource? If so, please do me a favor! I have included the links below to share with other intentional women! They’ll be glad you did!

This is a very kind way to handle things! We kids learned early on that “Mom, I’m bored…” would always be met with a “Great! I have just the thing for you to do!” followed by an assignment to peel the potatoes for dinner or clean the bathroom or fold the laundry or sweep the floors. She did spend quality time with us, of course, but with 7 of us, the “I’m boreds…” often came with she was in the midst of teaching one of the other kids, so she definitely liked the strategy of reminding us not to allow ourselves to be “bored” when there were things we could do to help around the house.
