Welcome back to my 31 Days of Decluttering In December! If you have missed any days in this series, no problem! You can find each day here!
It’s Day 27! We only have 4 days left to go in our month-long 31 Days Of Decluttering In December series!
Yesterday was Boxing Day. I’ve never really paid attention to what Boxing Day was because it’s not a celebration people really embrace here in the U.S. (or at least the people I know do not). However, after doing a little searching I think it’s going to become a new tradition in our home every year.
The idea of Boxing Day is that you box up items that you are no longer using or need and give them to those who do need them. I guess in some way we’ve been celebrating Boxing Day all month! I love this idea because not only is it helping others and spreading love, it helps remove the clutter in your home. It also helps spread the JOY of the season by giving rather than receiving.
In that spirit of giving and Boxing Day, today’s decluttering challenge is to cleanup and declutter your living room and dining room.
If your home is similar to mine, these two rooms are the biggest mess from Christmas. Before you begin, grab a box (or two), turn on some great music, get the family involved with their own baskets to take care of their items, and set the timer for 30 minutes! Have each family member gather their gifts and other possessions and as they are doing so, make sure that item is something that they need or love. If it isn’t, encourage them to box it up for someone else who needs it more!
Your home will be looking great in no time and I bet the attitudes of each person who helps will be better too after realizing how blessed you are. As you put items back into their proper places keep in mind if there is anything that can be recycled? Do you need to dust or wash the windows as you go? Kids love to help with these jobs! Check under the furniture, paper piles, clean off the coffee table, and other hot spots. You might even want to challenge everyone to find 5 or 10 items that you can share with someone else!
When you are done, take everything that you have boxed up and donate it! Treat the family to an ice cream or a fun board game when you get home! The purpose of decluttering your living and dining room is to make it a great place for the family to enjoy. Grab some books to read or even take a nap to relax!
I hope you enjoy your challenge today and your decluttered living and dining room! I also hope you would consider creating a Boxing Day tradition in your own home! Talk to your family about it and give it a try!
