Home Is Where Your Heart Is (And Isn’t)

How would your life change if you knew you only had 1 month to live?

Many of us have read the story of Brittany Maynard, the woman who has terminal cancer and is choosing to end her life with dignity.

I can only imagine how I would react to this heartbreaking news but I would hope that in that month I would hug, kiss, and tell my family how much I love them until they couldn’t stand hearing it anymore.  I would listen more, speak sweeter words, hold hands more and reconcile as many relationships that I could.  I would focus on savoring each and every moment.  Most importantly, I would make sure that my heart was set on God and that his light was shining through me.

Reading her story made me think about the environment in my home.  We’ve all heard the saying that home is where your heart is.  But what if your heart is absent?  If your heart isn’t at home, where is it?  Where are your priorities?

How many of us rush from one thing to the next, crashing into bed and starting over first thing in the morning?  How many of us are impatient with our family, using unkind words to get what we want?  Do you really listen to your husband and children when they are telling you about their day?  Do you demonstrate patience? Is it your way or the highway?  Most importantly, are you letting Christ shine in you?

I don’t know about you but I have a lot of work to do to work on my home!

What is one way you will start to make your home a place where your heart is today?

Have you enjoyed what you read here today?  Do you have friends or other women you know that could benefit from this resource?  If so, please do me a favor!  I have included the links below to share with other intentional women!  They’ll be glad you did!

Great post and reminders. It’s hard to get caught up in the moment of what needs to be done next or which child is the squeakiest wheel. I need to remember to slow down and savor the moment, not rush it.

Great reminder! I think we all get caught up in the things that “have” to be done. But, the laundry can wait and the dirty dishes can sit in the sink over night. We need to refocus sometimes.

Hey Jenny! I’ve enjoyed looking around your site tonight – it is great. And I am fascinated that you live on a farm. Loved the picture you took from the crop duster!!

You have a beautiful family and enjoyed getting to know you and your background more from your About Me. I think you need to write a post about how you manage to look so young – you certainly do not look old enough to have already been married 10 years with 5 kids! Good job, mama 🙂

Anyway, this post was a great reminder. I’ve heard it said that we are nicer to strangers than we are to our own families. It’s sad, but true. I will snap at my husband and then pick up the phone in a cheery voice to a complete stranger. Why is that? Definitely a heart issue.

Oh Kelly, you are WAY to sweet! 🙂 I definitely agree with you about the heart issues, and we all have them. Thank goodness for grace because there is always something to work on!

It is so important to be intentional every day… satan loves to misdirect us when we aren’t focused on doing what honors God… and we don’t even notice we are letting him do it… Thank you for your reminders here.

Such a good reminder…in light of all the online discussions (& offline) on not only Brittany but others who are dying with dignity (many who are choosing to not end their lives, but allow God to choose the timing) it is a vivid testimony to all of us that in a single MOMENT life can be forever changed. We need to take our days to heart. “Teach us to number our days aright”
