Changing Lives With Kindness

April 17, 2015 by Jenny Leave a Comment

This is Day 17 of a 31 day series on Biblical kindness. You can find the rest of the posts here!

Have you ever wondered how your kindness you spread to others can impact their lives? God works in wondrous ways! Listen carefully to what he's telling you

You can print Jeremiah 9:24 here!

Last night I finished Notes from a Blue Bike: The Art of Living Intentionally in a Chaotic World.  I have read Tsh Oxenreider’s other 2 books and have always enjoyed her writing.  This book was a little different as she leads you on a journey of her family’s life living overseas, back in the U.S. and trying to live an intentional life through it all.  I loved it and read the book in 2 days because I was captivated with their journey (but if you are looking for specifics on how to live a simplified life, her other two books, Organized Simplicity: The Clutter-Free Approach to Intentional Living and One Bite at a Time: 52 Projects for Making Life Simpler  give more practical advice).

In one of the chapters, the author travels to the Philippines to meet her family’s Compassion International child.  As she is describing the home of this little girl (which is poor beyond poor compared to most Americans) she notes the family’s bed is a heap of blankets tossed in a corner and how there are holes in the wall where you can see the neighbors watching you from their apartment.  Taped to the wall is a picture of Tsh and her family that they had sent in one of their Compassion International letters .  This picture is one of the family’s prized possessions.

I had to go put the book down and get myself together with a tissue while I processed all of this.  The author’s family lives a much more simple life than most Americans, by choice.  Because of this not only were they able to sponsor this little girl for $38 a month, but Tsh was also able to go meet her in the Philippines.

God works in beautiful, wondrous ways.

As many of you know our family also sponsors a Compassion child.  We write letters back and forth and it’s very sweet and gratifying to not only be able to help Luis’ family but also to get his drawings and updated photos.  We have been blessed by this opportunity.

However, Tsh’s account of meeting her Compassion International child has rattled me.  Even though I know our donation makes a big difference in Luis’ life, it broke my heart in many, many pieces that because of a very small act of kindness, one of his most prized possessions could be a picture I’ve attached to a letter we’ve sent.    I’m so humbled that I listened to God’s voice telling me that this was something I need to do.  The $38 that many of us spend frivolously can change someone’s life in such an extraordinary way.

That is God’s work.

God may not be asking you to sponsor a Compassion International child.  That’s ok!  He might be asking you to donate blood, stop bullying by volunteering time with kids that need some extra adult attention and guidance, go on a missions trip, or do other work in your own community.

My point is please don’t ignore the voice.  If you have the opportunity and privilege to help someone, sincerely consider doing so.  I have a feeling in the end, you will have found that you have changed a life.  And it just might be your own.
