Bullet Journal: Why I HAD To Start One

February 24, 2016 by Jenny 14 Comments

There is nothing I enjoy more than good books, planners, notebooks, pens, markers, and anything you can find at an art, hobby, or a book store. I love them all! I am so excited to show you my new-found love that I'm so excited about trying out...the bullet journal!

There is nothing I enjoy more than good books, planners, notebooks, pens, markers, and anything you can find at an art, hobby, or a book store.  I love them all!  I am so excited to show you my new-found love that I’m so excited about trying out…the bullet journal!

With an obsession for planners, paper, pens, and washi tape, I first discovered bullet journals about a year ago.  However, I just didn’t “get” how they worked.  I thought they looked complicated and I was worried about my perfectionist personality.  I just wasn’t sure I wanted to invest the time to try it out.

A few weeks ago I decided to check them out again when I saw a fellow blogger who had a habit tracker in her bullet journal.  I’ve struggled tracking some new habits in my planner and this looked perfect for what I was after!

Within 10 minutes of reading that post, I had ordered a Leuchtturm 1917 (the emerald colored notebook), Staedtler Fineliner pens, and planned a trip to Target to get a Moleskine notebook (the purple notebook) to try out with my Paper Mate Flair and Pilot FriXion pens (the ones I’ve used for years with my Erin Condren notebook).

There is nothing I enjoy more than good books, planners, notebooks, pens, markers, and anything you can find at an art, hobby, or a book store. I love them all! I am so excited to show you my new-found love that I'm so excited about trying out...the bullet journal!

I started out with the Moleskine because many people use them instead of the Leuchtturm 1917.  I didn’t think I’d like the dotted paper but that’s what Target had so I bought it.  I also ordered a Leuchtturm 1917 with the grid paper so I could try out the difference between the two.

There is nothing I enjoy more than good books, planners, notebooks, pens, markers, and anything you can find at an art, hobby, or a book store. I love them all! I am so excited to show you my new-found love that I'm so excited about trying out...the bullet journal!

One problem I’ve always had with planners is not enough paper where I wanted it and it wasn’t quite “personal” enough for me.  Bullet journaling gives me all the things I was missing with a regular planner (extra pages to write in my goals, quotes I wanted to save, tips I find online that I want to remember, my habits and affirmations, and much more).

So what is a bullet journal?  You can find the best explanation here, but basically I am using it as a planner and calendar, a place to sketch (when I get over my perfection issues), a place to track things I do on a daily basis such as habits and making sure I took my medicine, and meal planner all in one notebook.

I’ve seen awesome bullet journals on Pinterest where people draw and create beautiful masterpieces and also very minimalistic ones as well.  The beauty is your bullet journal can be whatever you want it to be.

I have issues with being a perfectionist and not wanting to “mess up” any of the pages (which is another reason why I tried the Moleskine out first).  However, I have spent a lot of money in the past on journals and planners that didn’t work and figured that $20 on a notebook was worth the investment if it’d solve my planner issues.  If all else failed I could keep it in my purse and use it for grocery lists and meal planning!

The emerald Leuchtturm 1917 is slightly larger than the Moleskine. The Moleskine has a softer cover so it’s easier to lay completely flat when you are working with 2 pages at the same time.  The Leuchtturm 1917 has a built-in index, the Moleskine doesn’t.   Whether you go with dotted, lined, or the grid that is a personal preference.  I prefer the grid but like the look of the dotted better.  (I just write nicer in the squares).

Here are a few examples of pages that I’ve started.  I obviously didn’t want to show my passwords for websites so that page is blank and the affirmation page has a lot of room for me to add more in the future.

There is nothing I enjoy more than good books, planners, notebooks, pens, markers, and anything you can find at an art, hobby, or a book store. I love them all! I am so excited to show you my new-found love that I'm so excited about trying out...the bullet journal!

Do you think this type of planner would work for you?  I will have several posts in the next few weeks with exact pages from my journal.  I want to break it up into bite sized pieces for you!  It’s been very fun to be able to plan creatively and functionally and I can’t wait to share the pages of my bullet journal!
Sometimes I feel hypocritical writing about marriage because I have one failed marriage under my belt. On the flip side, I've seen what really doesn't work and have experienced the pure joy of what a "good" marriage is all about. I've been married twice (for a combined total of 14 years) . Luckily the second time has worked out much better than the first! So please grant me grace, but I hope my experiences will only help you in your own marriage (or a friend's)! Here are 10 things I wish I'd known before saying, "I do".

Welcome to Women With Intention Wednesdays!

Here is what you will find at Women With Intention Wednesdays:

  • This is a link up party where you come to encourage one another, have fun, and share your best posts to help women live their best life!
  • In other words, any post that you have written about Christian living, homemaking, relationships, healthy living, living a frugal life or that helps another woman can be included in this link up! Please just them family friendly (I reserve the right to remove anything that I feel isn’t appropriate).
  • This link up is beneficial for every woman! Whether you are a blogger or a reader, this is one you won’t want to miss! I’m very excited to offer this link up as a place to not only build new relationships between bloggers but also by providing an awesome resource of information for my readers!

Here are the rules of this link up:

    1. You must link directly to your post (no homepages, please).
    2. Please link up no more than 2 posts each week and please do not link up the same post week after week.
    3. For every link you add, please visit the link before you and one other of your choice. If your links are consecutive visit the blogger before you and your choice for the 2nd link. It’s impossible to build relationships when no one communicates! Please don’t link and run!

    4. By linking up you give me permission to share your posts and photos on this blog and social media. Each week I will choose a featured blogger as well as the most popular post. I will only feature you and the most popular posts if you have followed the rules (otherwise I’ll move on to the next most popular post). All features will be linked back to the original source.
    5. You also give me permission to email you a quick reminder that the party is live. You may opt out anytime. I don’t spam my readers with emails.
    6. Answer the community building question below so we all get to know each other! That’s the purpose of being here! 🙂

I’d love for you to add a button to help spread the word about Women With Intention Wednesdays (thank you)!

Will you still use your planner or do you think the bullet journal will replace that?

I’m probably going to be replacing my planner. I want to use it a few months before saying 100% sure on that though!
