If you love chocolate cake, this is a recipe you will want to try! My mother-in-law makes this chocolate sheet cake for every birthday! It’s a tradition in our family and it’s absolutely yummy. (It’s even better the second day than the first, in my opinion…if there is any left after the first day!) You can add vanilla ice cream for an extra treat or eat just the cake. Both ways are dynamite!
If you need a twist for Valentine’s Day or an anniversary, I used a heart shaped cookie cutter to make the cake look fancier. Metal cookie cutters work best and you could also get creative for birthday parties with other shapes.
Chocolate Cake Ingredients:
2 sticks margarine (1 cup)
4 tablespoons cocoa
1 cup water
2 cups sugar
2 cups flour
1/2 cup buttermilk (If you don’t have buttermilk you can use 1/2 cup of milk and add 1/4 teaspoon of vinegar. Mix together separately while you mix together the rest of the ingredients and add at the end.)
1 teaspoon baking soda
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
Chocolate Frosting Ingredients:
2 tablespoons cocoa
3 tablespoons cocoa
1/2 stick (1/2 cup) margarine
chopped nuts (optional)
2 cups powdered sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
Cake Directions:
1. Bring margarine cocoa and water to a boil.
2. Add sugar and flour.
3. Blend in the buttermilk, soda, eggs, and vanilla.
Bake at 350º for 20-25 minutes in a greased and floured 10 X 15″ jelly roll pan.
Frosting Directions:
1. Bring cocoa, milk, and margarine to a boil.
2. Add powdered sugar, vanilla and nuts (optional)
3. Pour on hot cake.

Yum! I love chocolate cake 🙂 Do I have to let it sit after pouring on the icing or can I just dig right in?!

Either way! We ate it out of the pan with vanilla ice cream and that was yummy, too! 🙂

I don’t bake! But I would certainly enjoy eating this chocolate cake! For sure it sounds like it might be the best chocolate sheet cake ever–especially with nuts!
