Here is the next great way to help a new mom.  Did you miss the first?  You can find it here!

2. Offer the new mom an hour of your time!

Come up with a plan for you to come over and ask her what she needs some help with.  It works well to have an idea of what you are going to do before you get there just in case you need to bring supplies, but it isn’t necessary.  There are so many different tasks you can do to help the new mom.  Here are several ideas:

  • Let her take a nap or a shower while you rock the baby!  This is a sanity saver!  When I had my twins and they were on a every 3 hour feeding schedule, I didn’t think I was ever going to get a shower again.  A hot shower is so refreshing and is definitely a mood lifter!
  • Laundry.  Everyone has it, for new moms it seems to pile up everywhere!  You know the saying  that “all babies do are eat, sleep, and poop”.  Two out of those three involve the baby getting clothing dirty!  There are clean piles on the table, couches, and folded in laundry baskets and dirty clothes in piles that need washed. Just offering to take the clean clothes to the room where they belong is helpful!
  • There are always dishes that need washed and put away.
  • Prepare a meal for her family while you visit.
  • Wash her kitchen or bathroom floor.  Vacuum the carpets or dust.
  • Clean the bathroom.
  • If she has an indoor cat, clean the cat’s eating area and litter box.
  • If she has a dog, offer to take it for a walk or out to play.
  • Grab the kids and have a game picking up the play room.
  • Do a fun activity with the older kids.  Bring them a small present!  Go outside to the backyard, to the park, for a walk, play a game, chalk up the sidewalk or take them out for ice cream.
  • Go outdoors!  Offer to mow the lawn, weed the garden, pick the produce, pull weeds from the flower beds, rake leaves, or scoop snow.
  • Bring a pampering basket filled with good smelling bath salts or body wash, nice scented room spray, chocolate, or anything that you know she will like.  Then tell her to go use it while you watch the baby!
  • Spend an hour of just having girl time!  Paint her toe nails, pray with her, trade baby secrets, visit and enjoy a coffee together!
  • As the holidays are approaching can you help her with some shopping?  Can you help decorate or take down and put away decorations?
  • Does she need help decluttering a closet?
  • Send mom and dad out for a quick coffee or breakfast.  If it isn’t possible for them to get out, bring it to them and let them have an hour together relaxing.
  • Bring a bag of nutritious snacks and a magazine for mom to eat and read while she is feeding the baby and put them away while you straighten the living room.
  • Clean out her refrigerator.
  • Take out her trash.

Do you have any tips of how to help a new mom by giving her an hour of your time?

The 3rd way to bless a new mom will be continued tomorrow…
