Welcome back to my 31 Days of Decluttering In December! If you have missed any days in this series, no problem! You can find each day here!
Yesterday we started decluttering and organizing the Master Bedroom. Our bedrooms are supposed to be a calm, relaxing place for us to sleep. Many of us also use our bedrooms as an office, a place to store items that we don’t have anywhere else to store them, a kids play area (not by choice) or a place to fold laundry.
Today your assignment is decluttering the closet in your Master Bedroom. Tomorrow we will finish the Master Bedroom. So if you want to work ahead you can have a day off on Sunday, by all means go for it!
Here are some tips:
- Start with the floor. You have to be able to move around in there! My closet is long and narrow and really hard to move around in (even when it is spotless!) If there are clothes on the floor are they clean or dirty? Dirty need to go into the laundry and clean can be hung back up.
- After the floor is clean, it’s time to vacuum or sweep depending on your flooring.
- Now is time to see what you have in there besides clothing. Do you have purses or handbags? How many do you love? How many have you used in the last year? Keep those and let go of the rest!
- Shoes are next! Same idea! If you don’t love them or wear them (do they hurt your feet?) it’s time for them to find a new home.
- Are you storing other items in your closet that really need to go somewhere else? Christmas presents in my case? Ahem… it’s time for them to be wrapped and put under the tree!
- Once you are done with the extras, it’s time for your clothes!
When you are going through your clothes think about:
- Does it fit? Be honest! If the clothing makes you feel uncomfortable, is tight, scratchy, or too big, please let it go! In order to be confident women, we need to feel confident and that starts with how we feel about our body!
- Do I wear it? If the clothing hasn’t left the closet on you in a year, get rid of it. It’s taking up space!
- Are there holes, stains, does the clothing need altered in some way that you have never gotten around to doing? Be honest, if it’s something that you’ve been meaning to take care of for over a month, you probably aren’t going to do it. Out it goes!
- Is it dirty? Throw it in the hamper or dry cleaning pile. Does it needs hung up, hang it up! If it goes in the dresser, go ahead and put it away. Just don’t get distracted as you are putting the clothes back where they belong!
- If the clothing item is seasonal and you won’t be using it for awhile, could it go some where else (on the top shelf of your closet or in a tote)?
- What category does this item belong to (t-shirt, pants, sweater, dress, etc)? Group similar items together! I like to group my clothes be type and then by color. Short sleeve black shirts go first, long sleeve black shirts go after the short sleeve. It might be weird but makes it easy to find what I’m looking for.
- Finally, as you are putting items back in, do you need to get a basket to put your small items in? Do you need some extra shelving or hooks?
Remember, please do not donate items that have holes or stains. If you won’t wear them, someone else probably doesn’t want to either. With the rest of your clothes, you can consign the best, sell on Facebook, Craigslist, or Ebay, or donate them. In the spirit of giving, please remember what the season is all about. You might really be helping a single mom!
I can’t wait to know what you found to declutter in your master bedroom closet!
