Setting Goals To Get Results

(This post may contain affiliate links. Read my disclosure policy here.)

December 21, 2016 By Jenny 7 Comments

Do you struggle with the follow through on your goals or just setting them at all? Today I'm sharing with you how I've been setting goals to get things done.
I love setting goals but I haven’t always been the best at the follow through.  The last few years, I have really been working on the follow through process to be more productive.
The last few months, I’ve got more done and today I’m going to share my goal setting process to help you with setting goals to get results!
First, I break down my goals into groups: personal, family, spiritual,  business, etcetera . These are what areas are most important to me and the aspects of my life that I want to be the most intentional.
I still use the S.M.A.R.T. goal method for setting goals.
Then I prioritize. I rank my goals by which are most important and then by which are the most timely (which goals need to be done by a specific date).  I then choose my top goals and define a deadline for them.  Not all goals or projects require the same amount of time to complete. Some might be 12 months, others 2 months.  It’s important not to try to do every goal at one time. That’s overwhelming.  By prioritizing the most important in your categories, you can work on the most important (or 2 most important) and then move on from there.
I write down each goal on its own sheet of notebook paper. I have found it to be really effective to do a 15-30 minute brain dump on my goals. To do this, I list out everything I can think of that relates to that goal. When I can’t think of anything else I move on to the next goal and so on.
When I have a completed brain dump, I go back to each individual goal. I determine what action steps I need to do and by what date. I list specific details under the action step it relates to and make any other notes that pertain to the action step. Anything left from the brain dump that hasn’t been used I put where it belongs on the plan or decide if it’s not important.  If it’s not important I make a line through it and move on.
When I’m finished I add it into my planner and also add the first action step to my white board in my office to keep me on track.
I love doing this in December (but it can be done anytime) and to check in on my goals weekly. If I have life changes and decide the goal is no longer a priority I can go back to my original list and add in one that wasn’t a priority before or choose a new goal that better fits my life.
I realize this can be complicated, especially if you are not a natural goal setter or get overwhelmed easily.  Next week I will give a complete example of this process for Women With Intention Wednesdays!  I hope to see you back then!

Happy Wednesday! Thanks for joining in the party!

Sometimes I feel hypocritical writing about marriage because I have one failed marriage under my belt. On the flip side, I've seen what really doesn't work and have experienced the pure joy of what a "good" marriage is all about. I've been married twice (for a combined total of 14 years) . Luckily the second time has worked out much better than the first! So please grant me grace, but I hope my experiences will only help you in your own marriage (or a friend's)! Here are 10 things I wish I'd known before saying, "I do".

Welcome to Women With Intention Wednesdays!

Here is what you will find at Women With Intention Wednesdays:

  • This is a link up party where you come to encourage one another, have fun, and share your best posts to help women live their best life!
  • In other words, any post that you have written about Christian living, homemaking, relationships, healthy living, living a frugal life or that helps another woman can be included in this link up! Please just them family friendly (I reserve the right to remove anything that I feel isn’t appropriate).
  • This link up is beneficial for every woman! Whether you are a blogger or a reader, this is one you won’t want to miss! I’m very excited to offer this link up as a place to not only build new relationships between bloggers but also by providing an awesome resource of information for my readers!

Here are the rules of this link up:

  1. You must link directly to your post (no homepages, please).
  2. Please link up no more than 2 posts each week and please do not link up the same post week after week.
  3. For every link you add, please visit the link before you and one other of your choice. If your links are consecutive visit the blogger before you and your choice for the 2nd link. It’s impossible to build relationships when no one communicates! Please don’t link and run!

  4. By linking up you give me permission to share your posts and photos on this blog and social media. Each week I will choose a featured blogger and possibly another post such as the most popular post. I will only feature you and the most popular posts if you have followed the rules (otherwise I’ll move on to the next most popular post). All features will be linked back to the original source.
  5. You also give me permission to email you a quick reminder that the party is live. You may opt out anytime. I don’t spam my readers with emails.
  6. Answer the community building question below so we all get to know each other! That’s the purpose of being here! 🙂

Community building question: What is a goal or project you want to accomplish in 2017?

I am going to be revamping Women With Intention Wednesdays next year to hopefully get each of your posts more traffic.  I’ll explain more next week! 🙂

Have you enjoyed what you read here today? Do you have friends or other women you know that could benefit from this resource? If so, please do me a favor! I have included the links below to share with other intentional women! They’ll be glad you did!

I need to give this more thought…I like the way you split your goals into groups. My goals include some decluttering, praying more, and finding time to play the piano just for fun 🙂

One goal I have for 2017 is to finish up a photo project that I started this year. I’ve been going back through my digital photos and printing out the best and putting them in photo albums. It’s been a slow and long process, but I’m getting close! I think I can finish up next year. Merry Christmas!

Fantastic collection of links, Jenny! I couldn’t agree more about the importance of actually setting goals rather than just “winging it”, whether that’s on a day-to-day basis or the course of the next year. Even five.
