This series is off to a great start!
Today we are examining your values.
It’s important to know what you value because your values serve as a compass when making decisions in your personal life and in work. They help you decide which choices to make and how to act or behave to situations.
It’s important to remember when thinking about your values that they can change throughout your life. Before I had kids, being successful and accruing wealth were two of my values. After having my kids, my values changed. My family became far more important than being successful in a career.
Here is an extremely thorough list of values. When examining your values, first you need to look at the list and decide how to prioritize them. There is a great explanation of how to do so on that site. I suggest you follow their directions and soon you will know your top values.
A few other questions to ask yourself when deciding how to prioritize your values are:
- What have I done that has made me proud?
- When have I been happiest?
- What makes me feel fulfilled?
After you have a list of your top values, your challenge is to prioritize them.
Read through the first 2 answers and decide which is more important. Keep that answer and move on to answer #3 and repeat the process. When you finish, you will know what you value most. Now that you have your top value, repeat the process to find your 2nd top value. Repeat until you your values in order.
You will know that these values are correct if you would still keep them as your top values, when it wasn’t a popular choice or in the minority. You will be happiest when you are living and working in accordance with your values.
What were your top values today?
