Good Morning! Welcome back to my 31 Days of Decluttering In December! If you have missed any days in this series, no problem! You can find each day here!
I am so happy that I did my Christmas prep yesterday since I have 4 sick kids today! I am feeling so much better about my Chrsitmas shopping. I went through my email receipts and found 3 gifts that I had forgotten about completely! So I am closer to being finished than I originally thought. Yea!
Today we are decluttering the living room.
The living room or family room is designed to be the room in your home where you can relax and spend time with your family. I had to do some decluttering in our living room to have room to put our Christmas tree up this year (in the dining room) so it’s not nearly as bad as it gets sometimes.
However, our living room truly is the room we literally “live in.” Well… the kitchen is the room I seem to live in but everybody else is usually hanging out in the living room! It’s where the kids play, where we read books, watch television, take naps, fold laundry, and where we all cuddle up at night. In our house the equation is more people = more mess. Is that the same at your home?
Today the mess is going away! Grab a trash can, a container to put everything you want to get rid of into (or 2 containers if you are throwing some away and donating the rest). You will also need a laundry basket for the belongings you find that need to be put back away.
Here’s my order of events for decluttering the living room:
- First, I’m starting with the ceiling by dusting for cobwebs. That way when the dust falls down I haven’t already cleaned below it.
- Next is the couch. This might be a little difficult today with sick kids but besides kids and blankets, it’s going to be put away!
- After that I will do the television stand. The kids use the shelves as a catch all for toys and we have a big “31” tote full of DVDs that need to be cleaned out and many need to be thrown away because they are too scratched to play.
- The buffet that moved from the dining room to the living room will be after that. It’s definitely a catch all for papers. I’m going to add a little finishing holiday flair to it before I pull out all the furniture and vacuum.
- When you are finished organizing and decluttering living room, I hope you are very happy with the results. If you aren’t, try adding a bouquet of flowers, move a picture or mirror into the room or maybe move a different piece of furniture into the room or out of the room. Do you want to repaint? Add it to your list for after the holidays! There are many ways to transform a room without spending a lot of money. Be creative and let me know what you do to make your space more inviting!
- I’m hoping to have this done under an hour. When you are finished I hope you can light a great smelling candle and spend some time relaxing either reading a book, having 30 minutes of downtime or spending some quality time with your family!
